Dog Biting - by Skycaptintwo

Stop Dog Biting

Dog biting is not actually uncommon, around 50% of all dogs bite someone or another dog at some time in their life. This is all due to the fact that dogs are pack animals, and use biting to determine their order in the pack.

However when dogs live alongside humans, this behavior is much less than ideal. Dog biting and aggression are directly linked, you would not want to have a dog which bites in the same house as young children for example. If you want to stop dog biting then you need to stop it dead in its tracks as early as you possibly can. This will minimize the chances of your dog developing habits which make it anti-social, and you should end up with a friendly dog which won't be a risk to other dogs or people.

Dogs may only bite other dogs, or they may also bite humans as well. Whichever the case is with your dog it's not desirable. This is not acceptable and so you need to stop dog biting.

What you need to realize is that biting is a natural response of many animals when they encounter certain situations, they may for example feel threatened. Every animal, and every human for that matter possesses the "Fight or Flight" reflex, if your dog feels threatened then he will either decide to run away or fight, by biting.

Just think about what you do when you are threatened, or simply stressed. Some people are aggressive while others will just run off. It's all down to the person (and the dogs) personality. Every dog is different and will have different ways to get rid of their stress.

Your dog does this because he doesn't know any better, what you need to do is show him that biting just isn't acceptable. Dog biting can be caused by a number of different things, including:

  • Dominant behavior
  • Stress
  • Fear
  • Because they have young
  • Threatened

Dogs are very territorial animals, they may feel threatened if someone or another dog violates their territory or touches something that is theirs. It's possible to stop dog biting by avoiding these situations, however that will limit where you can take your dog.

If any animal has young they are always very protective over their offspring, this is completely understandable. If a dog does have puppies then you should not approach it unless you know it very well.

You should also look into getting some form of training for your dog, you can either take him to a professional trainer, or you can do the training yourself. Your dog will be trained that this type of aggression is not good.

Any good dog obedience training course will show the dog how he should behave and stop dog biting dead in its tracks.

There are also a number of other things which you can do to stop dog biting happening. If your dog is still young then get him used to being with and around other dogs. This will make him feel comfortable being with other dogs and people without feeling threatened.

You should also make sure that you have your dogs trust, this can be helped by spending a long time with them, and patting and stroking them. You should never tease your dog or allow your children to, no matter how cute his response might be when he is a pup. This will wind your dog up and make him aggressive, this could cause him to bite you.

If you catch and solve the problem early then it will be much easier to stop dog biting. You have to understand that no puppy comes knowing what to do, they need training. Whether you do the training yourself or hire a professional is up to you, but some form of training is vital. Make sure your dog is not one of the 50% which bite other people and dogs!
