Dog Training - by Warchild

Dog Training

If you get a new puppy then you might think that all will be wonderful, however you must remember that a puppy is just a baby dog. All puppies need to learn skills which will be useful and help you to both get along.

If you think that you're just going to get a puppy, and then sit back and relax while it does cute things then think again! A puppy needs training, which can be hard work at times. Some people will opt for an older dog rather than having to put up with dog training.

There are however many reasons why people want to have puppies, mainly because being with a dog since it was a puppy will create an unbreakable bond. There are some simple tips which you can use to make training easier. Dog Training is vital for your relationship to be any kind of a success.

Be consistent

You should spend some time thinking about what you will let your dog do when it is fully grown. You should stop your puppy from doing anything that you don't want him to do when he is fully grown, this will make it much easier as your puppy will already know what to do. For example if he nips people it may seem cute, however this will quite quickly progress into biting.

Improve his Social Life

Dogs are sociable animals, and so you should give him plenty of opportunity to interact with other dogs. If you don't get your puppy used to other dogs then he may be vicious to other dogs when he is older. Taking your puppy for a walk through the park is a great way for him to get used to seeing other dogs.

Trust

Trust is always very important in any relationship if your dog doesn't trust and respect you then it will be unwilling to follow your commands. You need your dog to trust you, otherwise it could be dangerous. Before you start any form of dog training you should make sure that you have the trust of your puppy. Simply petting your dog can make this much easier.

Be Positive

When training your dog you should avoid using punishment when they do something wrong, instead you should treat them when they do something right. Puppies really like to receive treats and they will quickly associate whatever it is they did to getting a treat. Your puppy is only too keen to please and will do anything to get another treat! This will train them to do what you want.

Carry your puppy

You should never drag your puppy if it doesn't want to go anywhere. Your puppy will really not like this. Just pick your puppy up and carry him if you have to, this won't annoy him, and he's not that heavy at the moment!

Chewing

This is basically the same as the first tip, don't let your dog to anything that you don't want him to do later on in life. This goes for chewing too, not only can chewing some things be bad for the puppy's health, but it can carry on into adulthood which is less than ideal.

Do the training yourself

It is always best to do the training yourself as your dog has to see you as being dominant, not a trainer. If you don't know what you are doing then you will need to learn, there are plenty of books, websites, and magazines all devoted to helping you train your dog.

A trainer is a possible option that you may want to consider however doing it yourself will not only get better results, but it will also save you a lot of money. Training your dog will help to build your relationship and improve how much your dog trusts you.

If you take all of this advice on board when thinking about dog training then you should have a nice friendly dog in no time at all!
